As we all know, the kitchen is the most important part of the house; it is where we store and cook our food, entertain guests, and make memories. Often times, the kitchen is one of the first rooms you see when you walk in– and when you walk into the kitchen, the foremost thing you take notice of are the cabinets.
Kitchen cabinets have many functional uses, like storing our food, our kitchen appliances, and our clutter– without them, our kitchens would be a wreck. Although, it’s important to not only recognize their practical uses, but also to realize that our kitchen cabinets are used as a way to express our stylistic preferences. To help you navigate and decide which style may be the best for you, here are 8 common cabinet styles that could be installed in your kitchen:
1) SHAKER-STYLE
- Shaker-style cabinets are comprised of a flat surface with a recessed panel in the middle.
- Recently on the rise, shaker-style cabinets have become a #1 seller and a house favorite. While this cabinet style has been around for a very long time, in the past 10-15 years it has come back around and become a kitchen staple, once again.
- Distinctive, yet timeless, this style of cabinet is simple in design and can fit in with virtually any interior style that already exists.
- Maintaining this type of cabinet isn’t difficult and just requires some basic cleaning.
- Shaker-style cabinets are available in an array of materials and colors.
2) RAISED PANEL
- Raised panel cabinets are characterized by the center panel of the door being slightly raised, adding dimension.
- This style of cabinetry is timeless, elegant, and versatile; often used in traditional homes.
- Raised panel cabinets are available in a variety of colors and wood types.
3) SLAB/FLAT-FRONT
- With no frills or frame, a flat-front cabinet door is just a flat panel.
- This style of cabinet goes well in a house with a simple and minimalistic design.
- Due to the cabinet door being a solid slab, it is very easy to clean and maintain.
- If desired, a flat-front cabinet door can be easily spiced up with interesting hardware, stain, or paint.
4) GLASS FRONT
- Glass front cabinets have the ability to keep items safe, while still showing them off. Lights can even be installed inside the cabinets for extra illumination.
- If the sound of all of your cabinets having a glass front sounds like it’s too much, glass front cabinetry pairs well with other cabinet styles, too.
- Glass front cabinetry is often used as an accent to show off certain kitchen pieces, rather than being used as a style choice for the whole kitchen.
- The reflective nature of glass makes the room seem bigger.
- This style of cabinet requires a two-step cleaning process, since the door is made up of both wood and glass.
5) BEADBOARD
- Beadboard styled kitchen cabinets consist of a row of wood planks lined up vertically, with a small indentation or ridge between each one.
- This style of cabinet can be easily customized since the “boards” used to make up the door come in various widths.
- Beadboard styled cabinets add warmth and texture, lending themselves to a more rustic kitchen style.
- While the complexity of this door makes it appear more unique, it also makes cleaning it a more tedious task.
6) INSET
- Inset cabinet doors rest inside of the frame, creating a smooth and classic look.
- This style of cabinet fits in with a modern or farmhouse kitchen.
- The fact that the door rests inside of the frame makes this style suitable for small kitchen, as it saves space.
- With inset styled cabinet doors, hinges will usually be exposed, so it is important to pick hinges that you like and won’t mind being visible.
7) LOUVERED
- Louvered styled cabinets are made up of layered horizontal slabs that would go well in a rustic styled home.
- This style of cabinetry adds texture and an unique, airy style that draws attention.
- Louvered styled cabinet doors are more difficult to clean because of the open slats in its design.
8) EUROPEAN
- Like slab style cabinetry, European styled cabinetry is made up of one flat panel, providing a sleek and seamless look.
- This style of cabinetry goes well with a contemporary kitchen design.
- Like shaker-style cabinets, European style cabinets are available in a wide range of materials and colors.
- Unlike any other cabinetry style, European cabinets are often laminated, making them easier to clean and better at concealing scratches.
